So... I come back to DA to find that using SXC photos is a no-go.

Blah. Blahdiblah!  I'm still going to use them. Why? Because I'll ask permission from the photographer to use them or if their rules state that they can be used on their profiles.  Because you still can!

If you're looking for an alternate royalty free stock site, try RGBstock.  They permit use for manipulations... however they too stipulate that commercial use permission must be sought from the stock supplier.

Their LICENSE [link] page is extremely easy to understand.
